Assiniboine

Also known as Nakoda, Assiniboin

The Assiniboine, or Nakoda, are a Siouan-speaking Indigenous people of the northern Great Plains, in present-day Saskatchewan, Alberta, Montana and North Dakota. Having separated from the Yanktonai Dakota, they became close allies of the Cree in the fur trade and in wars with the Blackfoot and Dakota. Today they live on reserves and reservations in Canada and the United States.
