Birendra of Nepal

1945–2001 · 20th century · Also known as King Birendra

Birendra (1945–2001) was king of Nepal from 1972 to 2001. He ruled at first through the partyless panchayat system, but the People's Movement of 1990 forced him to legalise political parties and accept a constitution making him a constitutional monarch. He was killed with his queen, Aishwarya, and other members of the royal family in the Narayanhiti Palace massacre of 1 June 2001.
