Black War

1820s–1832 · 19th century

The Black War was a period of violent conflict between British colonists and Aboriginal Tasmanians in Van Diemen's Land from the mid-1820s to about 1832. As settlement spread across the island, Aboriginal attacks on settlers were met by killings and the declaration of martial law in 1828. The 'Black Line' of 1830 failed to round up the Aboriginal people, but by the early 1830s most survivors had been removed to Flinders Island.
