Macquarie Harbour
Macquarie Harbour is a large, shallow inlet on the remote west coast of Tasmania, entered through a narrow passage known as Hells Gates. From 1822 to 1833 its Sarah Island held one of the harshest penal stations of the British Empire, for convicts who had reoffended in the colony. The town of Strahan on its shore later served the mining district around Queenstown.
