Boris Pasternak

1890–1960 · 20th century

Boris Pasternak was a Russian poet, novelist and translator, one of the major lyric poets of the twentieth century. His novel Doctor Zhivago, rejected by Soviet publishers, appeared in Italy in 1957 and became an international success. When he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1958, an official campaign of vilification forced him to decline it, and he died in disgrace two years later.
