Branimir of Croatia

r. 879–c. 892 · 9th century

Branimir was Duke of Croatia from 879 to about 892. He came to power by overthrowing Duke Zdeslav, a Byzantine client, and in June 879 received the blessing of Pope John VIII, which is often regarded as papal recognition of Croatia as an independent state. His reign turned Croatia firmly towards Rome.
