Breech-loading rifle
A breech-loading rifle is a firearm loaded at the rear of the barrel rather than through the muzzle, allowing much faster reloading, especially when lying down. Such weapons spread widely among European armies in the later nineteenth century. In the British campaigns of 1900–1903, breech-loading rifles and Maxim guns made the cavalry charges of the Sokoto Caliphate militarily hopeless.
