Brexit

2016–2020 · 21st century

Brexit was the withdrawal of the United Kingdom from the European Union, decided by a referendum on 23 June 2016 in which 51.9 per cent voted to leave. After years of negotiation the UK left on 31 January 2020, and a transition period ended on 31 December 2020. Gibraltar, where about 96 per cent had voted to remain, left with it, and its border arrangements with Spain were negotiated separately.
