Brussels-Capital Region

1989 · 20th century

The Brussels-Capital Region is one of the three regions of federal Belgium, together with Flanders and Wallonia. Planned in the state reform of 1970 but only set up with its own parliament and government in 1989, it comprises the City of Brussels and eighteen other municipalities. Officially bilingual in French and Dutch, it hosts the main institutions of the European Union and the headquarters of NATO.
