Burney Treaty

1826 · 19th century

The Burney Treaty was an agreement signed in June 1826 between Siam and the British East India Company, negotiated by Captain Henry Burney during the First Anglo-Burmese War. It allowed British merchants to trade in Siam on payment of a fixed duty based on the width of their ships and settled questions concerning the Malay states. It was the first treaty between Siam and a Western power of the nineteenth century.
