Burra, South Australia
Burra is a town in the mid-north of South Australia, founded after copper was discovered there in 1845. Its Monster Mine, worked largely by Cornish and Welsh miners, was for a time one of the richest metal mines in Australia and helped rescue the young colony's finances. Mining ended in 1877, and the town's stone cottages and mine buildings are now heritage sites.
