Darwin, Northern Territory
Darwin is the capital of Australia's Northern Territory, on the Timor Sea. Founded by South Australia in 1869 as Palmerston, it became the northern end of the Overland Telegraph in 1872 and was officially renamed after Charles Darwin in 1911. Japanese air raids from February 1942 made it the most heavily bombed place in Australia, and Cyclone Tracy devastated it in 1974.
