Telegraph

The telegraph was a system for transmitting messages over long distances by electrical signals along wires, developed in the nineteenth century. Submarine cables linked Britain with India, Australia and other parts of its empire, greatly accelerating imperial communication and commerce. Accounts of the British Empire count the telegraph among the technologies through which the empire integrated a global network.
