Dhammayuttika Nikaya

1833 · 19th century · Also known as Thammayut Nikai, Thammayut order

The Dhammayuttika Nikaya, or Thammayut order, is a reformist order of Theravada Buddhist monks founded in Siam in 1833 by Prince Mongkut while he was a monk. Influenced by the Mon monastic tradition, it insisted on strict observance of the monastic code and on study of the Pali scriptures. With royal patronage it became one of the two official orders of the Thai Sangha and spread to Cambodia and Laos.
