Cao Bằng
Cao Bằng is a mountainous province of northern Vietnam on the border with China. After the Lê restoration took Thăng Long in 1592, members of the Mạc dynasty fled there and, with Ming protection, held a rump state until 1677. Its remoteness and proximity to China made it a refuge for rebels and losing dynasties.
