Cape Coast Castle

1653 · 17th century · Also known as Carolusborg, Fort Carolusborg

Cape Coast Castle is a fort on the coast of Ghana, first built by the Swedes in 1653 as Carolusborg and taken by the English in 1664. It became the headquarters of English and then British trade and government on the Gold Coast, holding enslaved Africans in its dungeons before shipment across the Atlantic. It is part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
