Capelianus

fl. 238 · 3rd century

Capelianus was the Roman governor of Numidia who crushed the revolt of the Gordians in 238. Loyal to the emperor Maximinus Thrax, he marched the Third Legion Augusta on Carthage, defeated the hastily raised forces of the new emperors and killed Gordian II in battle, after which Gordian I hanged himself. His victory was short-lived, as the Senate continued the revolt in Italy.
