Gordian I

c. 159–238 · 3rd century

Gordian I was a Roman emperor in 238. As the elderly proconsul of Africa he was proclaimed emperor at Thysdrus by rebels against Maximinus Thrax, and the Senate recognised him and his son Gordian II as co-emperors. After about three weeks Capelianus, governor of Numidia, defeated and killed his son near Carthage, and Gordian hanged himself. His grandson became Gordian III.
