Capitulations of the Ottoman Empire
The Capitulations were agreements by which the Ottoman Empire granted commercial and legal privileges to foreign states and their subjects. They allowed foreign merchants to trade on favourable terms and to be judged by their own consuls. Originally granted from a position of strength, they later became a tool of European economic and political influence over the declining empire.
