Carl XVI Gustaf

b. 1946 · 20th century · Also known as Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden

Carl XVI Gustaf has been King of Sweden since 15 September 1973, succeeding his grandfather Gustaf VI Adolf. The Instrument of Government of 1974 left him a purely ceremonial head of state without political powers, and a change in the law in 1980 made his elder daughter, Crown Princess Victoria, heir to the throne. He is the longest-reigning monarch in Swedish history.
