Carol II of Romania

1893–1953 · 20th century

Carol II was King of Romania from 1930 to 1940. Having renounced his rights to the throne in 1925, he returned in 1930 to displace his young son Michael, and in 1938 he abolished the political parties and set up a royal dictatorship. After Romania lost Bessarabia, northern Bukovina, northern Transylvania and Southern Dobruja in 1940, he was forced to abdicate in favour of Michael and went into exile.
