Catawba people
The Catawba are a Native American people of the Carolina piedmont, living along the Catawba River on the border of North and South Carolina. Speakers of a Siouan language, they absorbed remnants of neighbouring peoples, including those of the former chiefdom of Cofitachequi, after epidemics and wars in the 17th and 18th centuries. They were allies of the English colonists, and the Catawba Indian Nation remains a federally recognised tribe based near Rock Hill.
