c. 1646–c. 1686 · 17th century

Henry Woodward was an English surgeon and explorer, often called the first English settler of South Carolina. Left among the local peoples by an expedition in 1666, he learned their languages, was taken by the Spanish to St. Augustine and later joined the Carolina colony at its founding in 1670. As an interpreter and trader he opened commerce with the Westo and later the Creek peoples, laying the foundations of the Carolina Indian trade.
