Caupo

d. 1217 · 13th century · Also known as Caupo of Turaida, Kaupo

Caupo was a chieftain of the Livonians at Turaida on the Gauja river in present-day Latvia. He accepted Christianity early, travelled to Rome around 1203 to meet Pope Innocent III and became a firm ally of Bishop Albert of Riga and the German crusaders, even against his own people, who rose against him in 1212. He was killed fighting the Estonians at the battle of St Matthew's Day in 1217.
