Cayuse War

1847–1855 · 19th century

The Cayuse War was a conflict from 1847 to 1855 between the Cayuse people and American settlers in the Oregon Country. It was set off by the Whitman massacre of November 1847, when Cayuse men killed the missionaries Marcus and Narcissa Whitman and others after a measles epidemic devastated their people. The provisional government raised volunteer militia, and five Cayuse men were hanged in 1850.
