Charles III Philip was Elector Palatine from 1716 to 1742, the last ruler of the Neuburg line. Before his accession he fought the Ottomans as an imperial general and governed Tyrol for the Habsburgs. After a quarrel with the Protestants over the Church of the Holy Spirit in Heidelberg, he moved his residence to Mannheim in 1720 and began the great Baroque palace there.
