Heidelberg
Heidelberg is a city on the Neckar in Baden-Württemberg, south-western Germany. It was the residence of the electors palatine of the Rhine from the 13th century until 1720, and its university, founded by Rupert I in 1386, is the oldest in present-day Germany. Its castle was wrecked by French troops in 1689 and 1693 during the Nine Years' War, and the ruins became an emblem of German Romanticism.
