Charles the Younger

c. 772–811 · 8th century

Charles the Younger was the eldest son of Charlemagne and his queen Hildegard. Crowned king by Pope Leo III in Rome in 800, he led campaigns against the Saxons and Slavs and was assigned the Frankish heartlands in his father's planned division of the empire in 806. His death without heirs in 811 left Louis the Pious as the sole surviving legitimate son to inherit the undivided empire.
