Chera Perumals of Makotai

c. 800 – 1124 · 9th century · Also known as Later Cheras

The Chera Perumals of Makotai were a dynasty that ruled much of Kerala in south-west India from about 800 to the early 12th century, with their capital at Makotai, or Mahodayapuram, near present-day Kodungallur. Their copper-plate grants, such as the Syrian Christian plates of Kollam, show a kingdom of chiefdoms, temple councils and active trade with the Middle East. After the dynasty ended, chiefdoms such as Venad became independent.
