Cherchell is a coastal town in Algeria, west of Algiers. Founded as the Phoenician and Punic port of Iol, it was renamed Caesarea by Juba II, who made it the capital of his Mauretanian kingdom in 25 BCE. Under Roman rule it was the capital of the province of Mauretania Caesariensis and one of the largest cities of Roman Africa, and its ruins and museum preserve many fine sculptures.
