The Chinese Red Army was the armed force of the Chinese Communist Party, formed from units that rebelled against the Nationalists in 1927 and 1928. Led by Zhu De and Mao Zedong, it defended the Chinese Soviet Republic in Jiangxi until the Long March of 1934–1935. In 1937 it was reorganised as the Eighth Route Army and New Fourth Army to fight Japan, and later became the People's Liberation Army.
