Second United Front

1937–1945 · 20th century

The Second United Front was the alliance between the Chinese Nationalist Party (Kuomintang) and the Chinese Communist Party against the Japanese invasion, formed in 1937 after the Xi'an Incident of December 1936. The Communists placed their forces under nominal Nationalist command as the Eighth Route Army and New Fourth Army, and their base became the Shaan-Gan-Ning Border Region. Cooperation broke down after the New Fourth Army Incident of 1941, and civil war resumed after 1945.
