Shaan-Gan-Ning Border Region

1937–1950 · 20th century

The Shaan-Gan-Ning Border Region was the Chinese Communist base area in northern Shaanxi and parts of Gansu and Ningxia, with its capital at Yan'an, from 1937 to 1950. Formed from the soviet area reached by the Long March, it was recognised as a special region by the Nationalist government under the Second United Front. There Mao Zedong consolidated his leadership, and the party developed policies it later applied across China.
