Chris Hani

1942–1993 · 20th century · Also known as Martin Thembisile Hani

Chris Hani was a South African anti-apartheid leader, chief of staff of Umkhonto we Sizwe and from 1991 general secretary of the South African Communist Party. Highly popular among young black South Africans, he was assassinated outside his home in Boksburg on 10 April 1993 by a right-wing extremist. Nelson Mandela's appeal for calm helped keep negotiations on track and an election date was soon fixed.
