Inkatha Freedom Party

1975– · 20th century · Also known as IFP, Inkatha yeNkululeko yeSizwe

The Inkatha Freedom Party is a South African political party founded in 1975 by Mangosuthu Buthelezi as a Zulu cultural and political movement, Inkatha, and relaunched as a party in 1990. Its rivalry with the ANC led to violence in KwaZulu-Natal and the Transvaal townships that killed thousands in the late 1980s and early 1990s. It joined the 1994 election at the last moment.
