Christian II of Denmark

1481–1559 · 16th century · Also known as Christian the Tyrant

Christian II of Denmark was king of Denmark and Norway from 1513 and of Sweden from 1520 to 1521, the last monarch of the Kalmar Union to rule all three kingdoms. After reconquering Sweden he had some eighty nobles and clergy executed in the Stockholm Bloodbath of November 1520, provoking the revolt that made Gustav Vasa king. Deposed by the Danish nobles in 1523, he spent his last decades in captivity.
