Kalmar
Kalmar is a city on the south-east coast of Sweden, facing the island of Öland across the Kalmar Strait. Its castle guarded the medieval border with Denmark, and in 1397 Eric of Pomerania was crowned there as king of Denmark, Norway and Sweden, founding the Kalmar Union. The city was fought over repeatedly, including in the Kalmar War of 1611 to 1613.
