Kalmar Nyckel

1638 · 17th century

The Kalmar Nyckel was a Dutch-built armed merchant ship that carried the first Swedish colonists to North America. Sailing with the smaller Fogel Grip under Peter Minuit, it reached the Delaware River in March 1638, where the settlers founded Fort Christina, the beginning of New Sweden. It made four round trips across the Atlantic for the colony, and a full-scale replica was launched in Wilmington, Delaware, in 1997.
