Communist Party of Burma

1939–1989 · 20th century

The Communist Party of Burma, founded in 1939, took part in the resistance to Japan within the Anti-Fascist People's Freedom League but went underground in March 1948 and began an armed revolt against the government. Backed by China from the late 1960s, it held large areas along the Chinese border until 1989, when its mainly Wa and Kokang troops mutinied and the party collapsed.
