Burma Independence Army

1941–1942 · 20th century

The Burma Independence Army was a nationalist force formed in Bangkok in December 1941 by Aung San and the Thirty Comrades with Japanese support. It advanced into Burma alongside the Japanese invasion of 1942, growing rapidly, and was reorganised by the Japanese as the Burma Defence Army and later the Burma National Army, which turned against Japan in March 1945. Myanmar's armed forces trace their origin to it.
