Constitutions of King John
The Constitutions of King John are the privileges of the Channel Islands traditionally said to have been granted by King John after the loss of Normandy in 1204. They are in fact known from the record of a royal inquiry held in 1248, which set out the islanders' rights, above all to be judged by their own jurats under Norman custom. Later royal charters confirmed them and they underpin the islands' autonomy.
