William Longsword

c. 893–942 · 10th century

William Longsword was the son of Rollo and ruler of Normandy from about 927 to 942. In 933 King Rudolph of West Francia granted him further lands in the west, probably the Cotentin and the Avranchin, giving Normandy roughly its later borders. He was murdered at Picquigny in 942 by men of Arnulf I of Flanders, leaving his young son Richard I as heir.
