Cornelis van Vollenhoven

1874–1933 · 20th century

Cornelis van Vollenhoven was a Dutch legal scholar at Leiden University who founded the systematic study of adat, the customary law of the peoples of the Dutch East Indies. He divided the archipelago into nineteen adat law areas and argued that colonial government should respect indigenous law rather than impose European codes. His school trained generations of colonial officials and shaped the plural legal system of the Indies.
