Cunedda

5th century · 5th century · Also known as Cunedda Wledig

Cunedda is a figure of Welsh tradition said to have come with his sons from Manaw Gododdin, near the head of the Firth of Forth, in the 5th century to drive the Irish from north Wales. He is remembered as the founder of the royal dynasty of Gwynedd, and early Welsh kingdoms such as Ceredigion, Meirionnydd and Rhufoniog claimed descent from his sons and grandsons. Historians regard the story as a later origin legend.
