Cyrus Cylinder
The Cyrus Cylinder is an inscribed clay cylinder issued after the Persian conquest of Babylon in 539 BCE. Written in Akkadian cuneiform, it presents Cyrus the Great as chosen by the god Marduk and describes the restoration of temples and deported peoples. It is often cited as an early statement of tolerant rule, marking the Achaemenid Empire's absorption of the Chaldean Empire.
