Dafydd ap Gruffydd

c. 1238–1283 · 13th century · Also known as Dafydd ap Gruffudd

Dafydd ap Gruffydd was a Welsh prince, brother of Llywelyn ap Gruffudd, who repeatedly changed sides between his brother and Edward I of England. His attack on Hawarden Castle in March 1282 began the war that ended Welsh independence. After Llywelyn's death at Cilmeri he claimed the title Prince of Wales, but he was captured in 1283 and executed at Shrewsbury.
