Darius's Scythian campaign

513 BCE · 6th century BCE · Also known as Scythian campaign

Darius's Scythian campaign was a military expedition led by Darius I of the Achaemenid Empire against the Scythians north of the Black Sea in 513 BCE. The Persian army crossed the Bosporus and the Danube, but the nomadic Scythians avoided pitched battle and withdrew, forcing Darius to retreat. The campaign illustrated the limits of Persian military power against mobile steppe peoples.
