David of Burgundy

1427–1496 · 15th century

David of Burgundy was an illegitimate son of Philip the Good, Duke of Burgundy, who had him made bishop of Utrecht in 1456 against the chapter's own candidate. Previously bishop of Thérouanne, he extended Burgundian influence over the northern Netherlands. His rule faced repeated revolts, above all in the Utrecht civil war of 1481–1483.
