Demonax of Mantinea

6th century BCE · 6th century BCE

Demonax of Mantinea was a Greek lawgiver invited to Cyrene around the middle of the 6th century BCE, on the advice of the Delphic oracle, to end civil strife there. He divided the citizens into three tribes and reduced the king's powers to religious duties and the royal estates. Herodotus records his reforms, which Arcesilaus III later tried to overturn.
