Desmond Rebellions

1569–1583 · 16th century

The Desmond Rebellions were two risings in Munster, in 1569 to 1573 and 1579 to 1583, led by the FitzGerald dynasty of Desmond and their allies against the expansion of English government under Elizabeth I. The second rebellion was crushed with great brutality and famine, and ended with the killing of Gerald FitzGerald, Earl of Desmond, in 1583. His lands were confiscated for the Plantation of Munster.
